Laois Junior 'B' Football Championship

Round 1

Sunday 12th July 2007

Ballylinan 2-12 Ballyroan Abbey 0-05

An exhibition of scoring from Willie 'Fog' Murphy accounted for half of Ballylinan’s total of 2-12 in this first round Laois Junior ‘B’ Football Championship victory in Ballyroan against the home side.  Ballylinan fielding a team with a good mixture of youth and experience started this tie brightly with three unanswered points from Larry Kealy and two from Willie Murphy in the opening ten minutes.  Ballyroan started to get into the game and put the Ballylinan backs under a lot of pressure but were finding it very difficult to create scoring opportunities and their only reward was a pointed free.  With the Ballylinan backs in excellent form they drove their team on and Ballylinan scored two goals in quick succession from Willie Murphy and Walter Hovenden.  Three points then from Larry Kealy, Willie Murphy and Jimmy Rowan left Ballylinan 2-06 to 0-01 ahead at half time.

From the start of the second half Ballyroan threw everything at Ballylinan but could not find a way past the Ballylinan defence.  The Ballylinan defence soaked up all Ballyroan could throw at them and only conceded four more points with only one of them coming from play.  The Ballylinan forward division continued to pick off the points with Willie Murphy, three, James Dunne, two, and Gary Walsh all on target.  This win now sets Ballylinan up for a quarter-final meeting with Rathdowney.
